ECHO Project Director

The Peabody Essex Museum, one of the largest and most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a creative, highly talented ECHO Project Director to oversee all aspects of PEM's ECHO project, from developing cross-cultural educational programming on Native American art and culture, to acting as project manager for initiatives involving staff across the Museum and the ECHO partnership, to providing detailed operational and financial oversight to budgets and activities.  Under the direction of the Deputy Director, the exceptional candidate will fill a multi-dimensional role in developing, implementing and managing educational programming on Native cultures in the US.

About the ECHO Program:
ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations) is an educational and cultural enrichment initiative serving hundreds of thousands of children and adult learners in Massachusetts and the U.S. with a special focus on educational exchange related to Native American art and culture. A wide range of programmatic initiatives are operated through ECHO, including cultural exchanges, collections sharing, curriculum development, teacher training, online and distance learning programs, exhibitions, performances, internships for high school and college-age youth, and a new residential internship program for Native American graduate students and emerging museum professionals.

ECHO was established by Congress as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and is supported by an annual grant of approximately $8.5 million, $1.5 million of which comes to PEM. ECHO brings to culturally diverse audiences many innovative programs, produced both by PEM on its own and collaboratively by six partner cultural institutions located in Alaska, Hawai`i, Mississippi, and Massachusetts. Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as PEM's point person and a key representative to the 6-institution collaborative of Native/non-Native educational institutions that comprise the ECHO partnership
  • Supervise and mentor ECHO Project Manager and ECHO Project Coordinator
  • Guide educational content for Web and outreach projects
  • Attend and help guide 3-4 ECHO partner meetings per year held in various U.S. locations

Job Requirements:

  • 5+ years of work experience in positions involving significant leadership within Native educational, Native museum, or Native community settings
  • Bachelor's degree. Desired: An M.A., Ph.D., Ed.D. or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in fields relating to Native/non-Native cross-cultural education and/or museum program development
  • National credibility in Native Education professional and cultural circles
  • Sensitivity and openness to wide range of cultural traditions of Native communities nationally
  • Skill in getting results through effective management of diverse people and processes, and within complex collaborations
  • Ability to create, implement, and manage budgets and a knowledge of basic finance

Executive Director

The Penobscot Marine Museum, an accredited history museum with renowned collections and model educational programs, seeks a leader to continue the advancement of a healthy, evolving institution with successful community outreach. PMM seeks a director with vision, energy, and the ability to communicate and implement goals at a midscale, modestly resourced museum. Opportunity to continue the dynamic transformation of a beloved regional history museum into an important regional resource for learning and enjoyment. ED must demonstrate the experience to attract resources and lead a complex, established organization with wide-ranging collections on a campus of 12 historic buildings; with changing exhibitions and an active schedule of events; a strong professional year-round staff of 10 FT and 6 PT; and an operating budget of over $1 million.

Required:

  • Leadership experience and vision: Minimum 5 years of management experience heading a related nonprofit or a department of at least 4 FT staff
  • B.A. in field such as history, museum studies, or management
  • Proven ability to organize fundraising campaigns and to make fundraising calls on individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Experience working with Boards and volunteers
  • Ability to motivate and manage staff, but also a can-do spirit to roll up sleeves and get things done
  • Passion for PMM’s mission and for sharing a museum with the public. Belief in community outreach and engagement
  • Aptitude and interest in marketing the museum and expanding its audiences
  • Creativity and openness to new ideas, innovation, and technology
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Acumen for nonprofit institutional finances
  • Outgoing, sociable personality; enjoys meeting people and being public face of the museum
  • Shared values to become actively involved in a small town and rural region with broad constituencies, including many sophisticated seasonal residents and retirees

Desired:

  • M.A. degree and/or expertise in American or maritime history, or demonstrated interest in maritime culture or industries, history, preservation, boats, or the sea
  • Familiarity with trends in 21st-century museums and innovations in informal and experiential learning
  • Knowledge of how to use museum resources for school curricula and other imaginative learning uses for youth, families, and adults
  • Demonstrated practice of high standards for collection management, historic preservation, and exhibition development
  • Experience at a regional, community-based organization
  • Experience leading successful partnerships/collaborations with external organizations
  • Belief in the value of digitization and experience with other electronic technologies

 Associate Curator of Decorative Arts

Opportunity for a mid-career curator to initiate projects and install and curate one of America's great Decorative Arts collections. The collection encompasses 20,000 European and American objects (including furniture, silver, metalwork, ceramics, glass, and wallpaper) from the Medieval period to the present. This position reports to the Director.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop exhibitions and publications
  • Care for and install the collection
  • Teach from and make the collection accessible to RISD students and faculty, the broader academic community, and general public
  • Acquire objects through purchases and gifts, with priority in 20th-century Design
  • Support fundraising and public relations efforts

Required:

  • M.A. in Art History or related field
  • 5+ years of curatorial experience in Decorative Arts, preferably at an art or college museum
  • A record of independent conceptualization, development, and organization of exhibitions and catalogues
  • Broad background in American and European Decorative Arts
  • Demonstrated interest in history of Design and Architecture
  • Experience with conservation and collection care; scholarly research and writing; public speaking. Connoisseurship skills
  • Strong collaborative and organizational skills to work with peers and faculty
  • Experience teaching from museum objects at college level
